Velociraptor mongoliensis
Far smaller and more bird-like than its cinematic depiction, Velociraptor was a turkey-sized predator covered in feathers. It was agile, intelligent, and equipped with a deadly 6.5 cm sickle claw on each foot used to pin and slash prey. The famous “Fighting Dinosaurs” specimen preserves a Velociraptor locked in mortal combat with a Protoceratops — both killed instantly by a sandstorm 74 million years ago.
Its large brain-to-body ratio suggests sophisticated behavior, including possible pack hunting and problem solving. It lived in the harsh deserts of what is now Mongolia and preyed on small horned dinosaurs and mammals.
