The living tank of the dinosaur world

Ankylosaurus was the ultimate defensive dinosaur. Its entire back and sides were covered in thick bony armor and osteoderms. The most famous weapon was its massive tail club — fused vertebrae and armor plates that could swing with bone-crushing force. Despite its tank-like build, it was a selective feeder on soft vegetation and surprisingly agile when threatened.

It lived right up until the asteroid impact alongside Triceratops and T. rex. Its armor was so effective that even the most powerful predators thought twice before attacking a healthy adult.

Fascinating Facts
  • • The tail club could generate forces capable of breaking the leg bones of large predators.
  • • Armor covered the body like a living fortress of bone and keratin.
  • • Despite its size it could move surprisingly quickly when threatened.
  • • One of the last armored dinosaurs on Earth.
